This is a unique antique cameo and 14K yellow gold with rose gold overtones brooch measuring 1 5/8 inch (42.6 MM) long by 1 1/4 inches (32.7 MM) wide with a hidden bail, enabling it to also be worn as a pendant. As early as 1805, craftsmen began using shell for cameos because it was easily carved due to its many layers, as compared to onyx or agate. Designs throughout history include many subjects. But, the most common of all is that of a noble Romanesque maiden with classic features, Roman dress, jewelry and intricately, often floral embellished hair. This particular cameo depicts a full figure of a walking maiden in a flowing windswept dress, holding a flower filled cornucopia. The cameo itself has a darker than usual background, and the figure is all white and highly detailed. There are no cracks or damage, even when held up to the light. The oval cameo is bezel set in a simple yet elegant frame with a rope border. It has a pin back with a secure lock and although not marked, is thoroughly tested and 100% guaranteed 14K. The brooch has been professionally cleaned and brightly polished and weighs 7.9 grams. 24799
