Portrait of Stalin, Silk Tapestry, Size 19” x 30.5”, circa 1950s. Made in People's Republic of China.
This is GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL OLD PIECE – not one of the replicas that have come on the market in the past two decades. Many such Chinese tapestries were exported to the Soviet Union before the relationship between the two communist countries turned sour during the 60s.
Measures approx. 19.0"x 30.5" (48 x 77 cm) in overall size. The bottom has Chinese inscription "STALIN" (in larger font) and "Dong Fang Hong ('The East is Red') Knitting Factory, Hangzhou, China. This rendition is based on a classic Soviet portrait of Stalin as depicted in countless propaganda paintings, posters and monuments.
The tapestry is in GOOD vintage condition. The bottom margin has some faint splotches (possibly left from ironing) and a small tear at the edge, but none of this affect the image; the damage is not glaring and actually adds character. The wrinkles will disappear when carefully steamed (not ironed!) When properly framed, this portrait can be a nice focal point for a Soviet collection!
